Opening of the 2018 Tay Salmon Fishing Season Highland Perthshire

Monday 15th January 2018, marks the official opening of the 2018 River Tay salmon fishing season.  Anglers from all over Scotland will gather in anticipation to secure the prized largest catch. The traditional opening of the salmon season on the River Tay has been held at Kenmore since 1947.

Why not join the anglers in a parade down to the river bank accompanied by the Vale of Atholl Junior Pipe Band  and be part of this historic Highland Perthshire event. Enjoy a dram from Dewar's World of Whisky to toast the blessing of the water for the new season. After that 'tight lines' will be declared and the first cast of the day will begin.

If you enjoy fishing why not take part? Salmon fishing permits are available from The Kenmore Hotel on the day. You may win the coveted prize of the largest salmon caught that day. Take a photo of your catch, then measure its length and girth (from the front of the dorsal fin) ensure a witness is on hand and call the Kenmore Hotel with your results! All salmon caught before April must be returned to the river.

The River Tay is Scotland's longest at 119 miles and is one of the country’s five big Scottish salmon rivers. Scotland is recognized across the world as the destination for salmon and freshwater fishing. Game and coarse angling is worth more than £100 million to the Scottish economy and attracts a vast number of fisherman to the area.
